Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to Meet President Trump Amid Rising Tensions
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House next Tuesday, amid escalating trade tensions and recent controversial remarks from the U.S. leader suggesting Canada could become the 51st American state.
Carney announced the visit during a press briefing on Friday, saying the meeting follows a “very constructive call” with President Trump earlier in the week.
“On Tuesday, I had a very constructive call with President Trump, and we agreed to meet next Tuesday in Washington,” Carney stated. “My government will fight to get the best deal for Canada.”
The visit comes at a particularly strained moment in Canada-U.S. relations, with ongoing disputes over trade and sovereignty. Carney emphasized that while diplomatic efforts will continue, they won’t be without challenges.
“We are meeting as the heads of our respective governments,” he said, “but I’m not pretending those discussions will be easy.”
Carney recently led the Liberal Party to victory in Canada’s federal election, speaking to supporters in Ottawa on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, following the announcement of the results.
